Guelph’s Premier NO-GI Grappling Academy
Bringing Modern High level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) to the Royal City
What is Brazilian jiu-jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds.
BJJ revolves around the concept that a person can successfully use mechanical leverage and weight distribution to take an opponent to the ground, control them, gain a dominant position, and use a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds.
BJJ started as a niche martial art in Brazil, now popularized by the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) and become one of the fastest growing combat sports on the planet capturing the attention of the world.
What is NO GI jiu-jitsu?
In No-Gi, you don't wear a traditional uniform, but rather shorts and rash guard. The engagement starts standing, where you look to take your opponent to the ground, pin and submit them. The bottom player will look to manage distance, off balance, and get on top or submit their opponent.
The sport of grappling has exploded in popularity in recent years alongside the popularity of MMA - with millions of practitioners across the globe including celebrities, hobbyists, and athletes.
The competition circuit of grappling has gained significant momentum, with IBJJF, ADCC Worlds, EBI, WNO, UFC BJJ, and various professional circuits selling out arenas worldwide. The local competition scene in Canada offers plenty of opportunity for amateur athletes to test themselves in similar rulesets.
