What is Brazilian jiu-jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a self-defence martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting (ne-waza) and submission holds. BJJ revolves around the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using leverage and weight distribution by taking an opponent to the ground, controlling one's opponent, gaining a dominant position, and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds. What was once a niche martial art in Brazil has become one of the fastest growing combat sports on the planet capturing the attention of the general public, high profile athletes, and celebrities alike.
What is NO GI jiu-jitsu?
In NO GI Jiu-Jitsu or “submission wrestling”, you don't wear the traditional uniform known as the GI or kimono. Instead, you wear shorts and a t-shirt or rash guard. In NO GI you can't grab your opponent's clothing and this freedom of movement allows for a more dynamic, exciting and submission oriented style of grappling .
The sport of NO GI Jiu-Jitsu has exploded in popularity over the past number of years thanks in large part to the emergence of the Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI) submission only tournament, and the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) events hailed as the “Olympics of Grappling.” The popularity of these event has given rise to a new wave of highly technical NO GI practitioners like Gordon Ryan, Craig Jones, Jason Rau, Gary Tonon and many others.
